The knitted band is nice and stretchy to fit a range of head sizes while the crochet mesh slouches over in three lengths. Since the band draws the crochet together to fit the hat, you could change the crochet hook size to bring the hat out or in at the sides and still have the band to help ensure fit.

This is a crochet summer hat with a knit band. It’s designed in three lengths for slouchiness.
I recommend using cotton for the closest match to the lengths in the pattern. My test run in wool came out quite a bit shorter.
